How We Rate Casinos
Our team uses a detailed eight-part methodology to assess online casinos available to players in Canada. Each element receives a weighted score, and the final result is a single number from 1 to 10. Below, we explain every area we check and what matters most.
1. Licensing & Regulation
A casino must hold a valid license from a respected authority before we consider it safe. We verify licenses from the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), the United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC), the Government of Curaçao, and any provincial or territorial license for Ontario or other Canadian regions. We check that the operator’s name matches public registers, confirm the license is active, and look for past disciplinary actions. A casino with no license or a questionable one receives a low score immediately.
2. Game Selection & Software Providers
We look at the full library of games a casino offers. Slots must include classic, video, and progressive jackpot titles. Live casino tables need real dealers for blackjack, roulette, baccarat, and game shows. Table games such as poker, craps, and sic bo should be present in multiple variants. The software providers matter just as much. We expect titles from established studios like Microgaming, NetEnt, Evolution, Playtech, and Pragmatic Play, plus newer independent studios for variety. A casino with a small or repetitive collection scores lower, even if the games are high quality.
3. Bonus Terms & Wagering Requirements
We read every line of the promotional terms before assigning a score. A bonus is only valuable if the rollover requirement is fair. We look for wagering multiples between 20x and 40x for deposit matches, and we flag anything above that. Maximum cashout limits must be clearly stated and not unreasonably low. Game weighting matters: slots should contribute 100%, while table games and video poker often contribute less or nothing. We also check for hidden restrictions like excluded payment methods, short expiry windows, and game restrictions. If a bonus looks impossible to clear, the score drops sharply.
4. Payment Methods & Withdrawal Speed
Players in Canada need fast, low-cost ways to move money. We check the available deposit options, including Interac, crypto (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin), e-wallets (Skrill, Neteller, MuchBetter), and bank transfers. For withdrawals, we measure the average processing time after approval. E-wallets should pay within 24 hours, crypto within a few hours, and bank transfers within 3–5 business days. We also note any fees, transaction limits, and currency support for CAD. A casino with slow payouts or hidden charges earns a lower score.
5. Customer Support
We contact customer support through every channel the casino offers. A top rating requires 24/7 live chat with real agents, not just bots. Email support must reply within 24 hours with helpful, specific answers. We test responsiveness at different times, ask both simple and complex questions, and note whether agents are friendly, knowledgeable, and able to solve issues without passing us around. A casino with no live chat or delayed email responses loses points quickly.
6. Mobile Experience
Most players use phones or tablets, so mobile usability is critical. We test the casino on iOS and Android devices, using both mobile browsers and any dedicated apps. The site must load quickly, keep navigation simple, and allow full account functions: deposits, withdrawals, bonus claiming, and game play. We check for broken buttons, layout problems, and whether the live casino runs smoothly on smaller screens. A responsive design is acceptable, but a well-built native app can earn slightly more credit.
7. Responsible Gaming Tools
A trustworthy casino gives players control over their spending and time. We look for deposit limits (daily, weekly, monthly), loss limits, wager limits, session time reminders, cooling-off periods, and self-exclusion options. The tools must be easy to find within account settings, not hidden in fine print. We also check for links to external help organizations like ConnexOntario or Gamblers Anonymous, and whether the casino enforces self-exclusion requests promptly. A casino with minimal or hard-to-use responsible gaming features receives a lower score.
8. Our Rating Scale
After evaluating all seven areas above, we calculate a weighted score from 1 to 10. The weighting reflects the order of importance shown on this page: Licensing & Regulation carries the most weight, followed by Game Selection, Bonus Terms, Payment Methods, Customer Support, Mobile Experience, and Responsible Gaming Tools. Each area receives a sub-score, then we combine them into a final number with one decimal place. Here is what each range means:
- 9.0–10.0: Outstanding in every category. No significant weaknesses. Safe, fair, and enjoyable.
- 7.0–8.9: Very good with minor issues in one or two areas. Still highly recommended.
- 5.0–6.9: Average with noticeable problems in payment speed, bonus fairness, or support. Play with caution.
- 3.0–4.9: Below average with serious concerns. We suggest looking elsewhere.
- 1.0–2.9: Poor or unsafe. Avoid this casino.
No casino receives a perfect 10 if it fails a single critical check, such as unlicensed operation or abusive bonus terms. Our score is a snapshot at the time we complete the assessment, and we update it when the casino makes meaningful changes.
